Upon graduating from high school, I went immediately into the University of California at Los Angeles and earned my degree in Communications. From there, wasn’t sure what I wanted to do, however I had always been brought up to be a doctor or lawyer and hated Chemistry, therefore it was off to the George Washington University Law School.
Following the path, I had somewhat capriciously blazed for myself, I was now forced to enter the working world to pay off some rather heavy debts. Throughout, my entire experience in the working world, I always looked for business opportunities to attack. More and more, I wanted to work on personal projects. In mid-2004, I decided to leave the traditional work world and engage in business opportunities that I was truly passionate about. Through trial and error, and some very solid business experience, failures and successes, our company is beginning to take flight. Following are the reasons that were determinative in my decision.
Fortunately at this point in my life, I do not have any dependent children or a wife that I would need to provide for. I only have myself to take care of, therefore if through my pursuits things get tough at times and money is sparse only I will be eating Ramen noodles for ten straight days. (Actually that never happened, but I was prepared to do it.) Also, a motivating force was to put myself in a position where my future dependents had very comfortable lives and potentially could work in a future family company or engage in interests that they sought to pursue the future. The person with dependents should not exclude themselves, however it is just one additional factor that must be considered when making the decision.
You will only truly succeed in life, business, love, and everything else in life if you are passionate about it. You are either doing what you love and enjoy coming to work every day or you are not… Generally there is no in between. If money were not an issue in your life, would you still be in the line of work you are in? Most people say, hell no to that question. Once they realize that they don’t need to have a lot of money to engage in their passion, then it is much easier for them to take the appropriate step.
Fortunately, my parents advised me to take chances and make things happen, however others were quick to let me know that I would learn more working at a law firm or major corporation prior to starting my own company. This simply isn’t true. When starting your own company, you are forced to know everything about everything from management to marketing to legal. In our short existence, I have worn so many hats and experienced so many things all while being one of the primary problem solvers, decision makers and responsibility bearers.
In my mind, it makes no sense to have set hours. The simple fact of the matter is people are different, some are more effective working from 1pm-10pm, some are more effective working from 5am-1pm, why have a set time frame? Google handles this obvious human trait well by giving their employees greater flexibility with time. The key to this is getting your work done! Most people spend 8 hrs a day getting about 1.5 hrs worth of work done. Obviously, with your own company, you will set your hours and employees hours and things will be done on your own terms.
Corporations, companies and law firms have a well established hierarchical infrastructure that has been I place since the beginning of time and there is nothing that can be done about it. The Senior partner in a firm is always more knowledgeable than the Junior Partner, despite the intelligence, drive and vision of the less senior employee. This is stupid, however this is life inside a traditional working environment and despite your work, if you stick around long enough and just get by, you will be the smart one too in thirty years.
Assuming you are actually contributing to your working environment, your salary or hourly wage is far underpaying you than what you are worth. Let’s think about this in the publishing realm where a writer gets $200 for an article that they wrote for Maxim Magazine. The writer spends five hours on the piece therefore earning him $40 per hour. Maxim then takes the article and puts it in their magazine and on their website. The article ranks for certain keywords that the writer used in the magazine like “Hottest Girls In Florida.” Ten years down the road, when someone types in those keywords, that article will appear, users will click the ads, Maxim will make the money.
Many people are frightened to engage in their own business because of the security they believe a steady job provides. They collect their check and are certain to be paid each month on time. On the flipside of this, however should that company hit it big, then your monthly check will most likely be the same as well. You now have a limited earning potential. Many people do not think about this as they go through the monotony of their day. Therefore, when you create and implement that billion dollar idea for your company, your salary will remain at 4K per month.
The only way to succeed in life is through hard work. All the success stories you hear that seem like overnight success stories were achieved through well thought out plans, endless work, and persistent dedication. If you have to put this type of work in to succeed, then shouldn’t you be doing it for yourself?
Now before quitting your job today, first think about your decision, but then decisively act on it.

Number 7 all the way
#7 is the only one that really matters, without being passionate about your job and actually enjoying it you typically won't succeed (and even if you do, you probably won't enjoy the success as much.)
