PLEASE TAKE NOTE OF THIS ADVICE. A wide variety of people are arrested every day and the majority of the individuals make the same mistakes which make there situation even worse. Many of these reactions are understandable, however some defy logic and reason. Nobody plans on being arrested, but you may be arrested for simply being in the wrong place at the wrong time. Share this with your colleagues, friends and family because it will come in handy for many of you. The basic rule is to simply listen to the officer and do as your told, "Put Your Hands Behind Your Back" and do NOT do any of these Ten Things:

1. Don't Talk.

Do not say a word to the officer. Shut the F. up! I cannot stress to you the importance of this rule. Do not talk! Do not attempt to convince the officer of your innocence. Everyone is innocent, no one should be arrested and no one should be in jail and that is all the officer hears all day every day. He / she does not care generally whether you are innocent or guilty and there is nothing that he / she can do at this point. Most times, when people speak to officers they say something that makes their situation far worse. Keep your mouth shut, there will be plenty of time to talk later.

2. Don't Run.

I said above to listen to the officer and follow his / her instructions. Do not be scared and do not let the liquid courage aka alcohol convince you that you can outrun the twelve officers and helicopter that will track you down. Also, police become highly suspicious that someone running has a weapon and may be quick to draw their weapon. Additionally when they do run you down expect much stronger force used to subdue a fleeing suspect.

3. Never Resist Arrest.

Perhaps the most important thing not to do is touch the police officer at all! Again, sober up quick and follow what the officer says. Many people attempt to bump the officer or swat an officers hands away. This often falls under the assault statutes and now a minor misdemeanor arrest becomes a FELONY. Thus a reckless driving charge leads to a year or more in state prison. Additionally, touching the officer in any way can lead to a batton in the mouth.

4. Don't Believe the Police.

It is perfectly legal for the police to lie to get you to make an admission. The police frequently separate two friends and tell one the other one ratted him / her out. Because of the lie, the other friend now rats the first friend out. Police and detectives also state that "it will be easier" to talk now...LIES!!! DON'T BELIEVE THIS BS! It will only be easier for the police to prove their case!

5. No Searching.

Do not allow the police to search anywhere! If the police officer asks, they do not have the right to search and must have your consent. If you are asked make sure you proclaim to any witnesses that "You (the police) do not have consent to search." If they perform the search anyway, that evidence may be thrown out later. Also, if you consent to a search, the officers may find something that you had no idea you had placed somewhere, ie: marijuana left by a friend.

6. Don't Look At Places Where You Don't Want Police to Search.

Police are trained to watch you and react to you. They know that you are nervous and scared and many people look to the areas that they don't want the police to search. Do not react to the search and do not answer any questions. LOOK DOWN AND KEEP YOUR MOUTH SHUT!!!

7. Do Not Talk Shit to the Police.

I don't care if you have been wrongly arrested and the true culprit is standing in front of you. Don't talk shit! Police hear all day that my dad is the the Governor's Assistant's Intern and I will have your badge for this! Police have a lot of discretion in the upcoming charges brought. Police can add charges, change a misdemeanor to a felony, or even talk to the prosecutor that is ultimately prosecuting you.

8. If Police Come to Your Home, Do not Let Them In and Do Not Step Outside Your Home

If the police are confident you have committed a felony, they are coming in anyway, because they generally don't need an arrest warrant. Make it clear to the police by stating: "No you may not come in", or "I am comfortable talking right here", or "You need a search warrant to enter my home." If they return, your attorney can arrange for you to turn yourself in should that be necessary and you will spend no time in jail between the hearings.

9. Outside Your Home Arrested, Do Not Accept Offer to Go In Your Home for Anything.

The officer may say to you, how about you go inside and change, freshen up, talk to your wife, husband, get a jacket, or any other reason. The police will graciously escort you in and then tear your home apart searching through it. Also, do not let them secure your car. Your car is fine. Remember they are lying to you. They don't give a damn if you are really cold or if you need to talk to your wife or husband.

10. Don't say a word.

It's incredible how many people feel that they can convince the officer, the booking officer or a detective (if your case reaches that stature) that they are not guilty. YOUR CASE IS NOT DECIDED BY THESE PEOPLE. They have no affect on your records. Wait to speak to your lawyer! The courts give enormous weight to "confessions" during this stage. A suspect is almost NEVER released after being arrested.

Follow these ten simply rules religiously and many of your rights will remain intact. I don't care how nervous, scared or drunk you are, THESE RULES ARE VERY IMPORTANT, and will help you tremendously in the short and long run.

Quick Test Question

An altercation occurs with your live in girlfriend. When the police arrive they find you on the sidewalk, a few houses down the street. Your girlfriend points you out and the officers then arrest you for assault. During the arrest, they let you know that they do not intent to question you. They just need your name and address. What do you do?

Answer

Well the police are lying to you and rule number 1 is to keep your mouth shut, so you don't say anything. Your name is all you may need to give. If you give your address, that may indicate that you live together converting your alleged crime from a misdemeanor to a felony. An officer will attempt to get you to make an admission, especially when they have no evidence. KEEP YOUR MOUTH SHUT!

Retard

Really, you are on big messed up f*ck

They like to claim 'most cops are good' but

the 'good' ones always cover for the bad ones.

And that makes them criminals.

They may fool themselves but they can't fool the public.

And that's why the public has such a low opinion of cops.

just a theory...

man... i some countries it will not work...

Cops R Douche Bags!

Cops r mostly just thugs. They want a fat overtime check and unionized job protection. They want donuts and to loaf and sleep in their squads. Then they exercise by infringing on our rights and beat us down. We're not citizens anymore but to pigs we're "civilians". They're afraid of the real thugs because niggas got guns. They spend allatime going after parking violators when there's murder and mayhem in the streets. Cops need to start killing more niggas and leave us decent White folk be. We don't need cops anyway just our own concealed weapons. Thank you. Kiss my ass.

depending.

while some cops may be assholes, our society would be a sorry place without them.if you havent committed any crime, don't worry about it.

lame asses

who gets harrassed by cops? it is probably a bunch of lame white guys who have done so many drugs that they _think_ they are being inconspicuous, when in fact they smell like pot from 10 feet away and have a needle still stuck in their arm. Oh, yeah - and the ty-dye shirt - anyone wearing a ty-dye shirt in public _needs_ a little police brutality.

not lame asses. this shit is VERY REAL

hey brent, even if you were trying to be funny, I really want to grab you by your fucking throat and slam it into a dirty fucking toilet, hopefully to clear your head so you'll wake up to whats going down on the streets all over America. Instead, i'll calm down and give you a little education. The militarization of police forces all over US, creating these WARRIOR cops b/c of post 9/11 and patriot act era, and ultimately because of the Bush administration has increased police brutality dramatically and many of peoples rights are being taken away daily. just look at youtube. The evidence is out there, but to help you understand my anger towards your comment, let me tell you my story.

With regards to crime, I was a pretty sheltered kid, I may have stolen gum packs a couple times as a boy while in the supermarket line with my mom pushing me in a shopping kart, but I had nothing to do with the hustlers and street kids who were always up to no good. Point being, I didn't know shit about how to lie, steal, cheat, deal with cops, or know my rights.

So one night in newport beach i was walking to a party with some bros, when one of us geniuses decides to go inside this house that was under construction... We all followed along and broke into it. There wasn't anything of value inside the house, and we surprisingly didn't break or destroy anything either (as us young college boys loved to do). All we did was take shits on the floor... We were obviously drunk, and stayed to long inside the property... long enough for the cops to come. The moment we all got out of the house They came. And sat us down, split us up.. and started questioning. My friends didn't say shit....... I naively did... being honest didn't pay

getting to the point I was charged with 3 FELONIES! 1) first degree burglary and the other 2 were for my 2 fake ID's. I spent a week in jail, not knowing what to do and STILL TELLING THEM WHAT HAPPENED before speaking to a lawyer in the hopes it would realease me from jail. I GAVE THEM THE ONLY EVIDENCE THEY HAD AGAINST ME. like a fucking bitch, but I didn't know any better and i was scared. I had to pay shitloads for a lawyer, and he got it all down to a misdemeanor, after 1 year of court process, cuz the fuckers actually wanted to put ME, a champion athelete, stand up student, good hearted kid into COUNTY jail for 2 motherfucking long, getting fucked up the ass years!

I'm now thankfully serving communtiy service doing very hard labor on the freeway for the summer. which i'd much rather take than jail.

So to those who read this, start researching and STAND UP, cuz the cops are getting way out of hand in this time. I see articles everyday about police brutality and citizens rights being thrown into the garbage.

to the author, I wish i could have read this earlier, but thank you for writing it.

Cops do their jobs=FUK DA POLICE

You illegally trespassed onto private property and got punished for it.
You had an illegally forged document and got punished for it.
You had a second illegally forged document and got punished for it.

.....

I'm failing to see where the police officers have done anything wrong.

.....

Is your claim that you are generally a good person, therefore you shouldn't be punished if you do something wrong?

.....

"You are under arrest for murdering your girlfirend."
"But she was cheating on me."
"Murder is illegal!"
"But I get straight A's at school and I'm in the chess club."
"Straight A's does not allow you to commit mur....wait, did you say chess club? Okay then, you are free to go."

A "good hearted kid" with 2

A "good hearted kid" with 2 fake IDs? Well, I don't know where you live (but I have a good guess :)), but isn't using a fake ID a crime, anyway?

You...a stand up

You...a stand up student...LMAO. You sound like a bunch of burglars. "We didn't break anything" - We all followed along and BROKE into it. Pendejo!
Yet another classic case of MONKEY-SEE-MONKEY-DO. Sounds like the cops did there job. I bet you wont be breaking into any more houses will you. Empty or not.

You are not a champion

You are not a champion athelete, stand up student, good hearted kid. You are a self professed criminal. You committed a crime and deserve to be punished for it. Just because you think you are a champion athelete, stand up student, good hearted kid, doesn't make you one. Next time think, and listen to the voice in your head and everything will be A-OK. The ONLY people who talk shit about the police are those who get their attention - CRIMINALS. Cops have a HARD ass job to do, and I don't see anyone giving them the props they so deserve. Yes there are bad apples, but that is true for EVERY profession, don't kid yourself.

Just curious. What happened

Just curious. What happened with the friend that said nothing?

Police are being militarized

Police are being militarized in order to better protect themselves and each other. In a city near me, a police officer was brutally murdered....shot in the back of the head during a routine traffic stop...the person who shot him came up from behind him, and wasnt even involved in the traffic stop....the officer didnt stand a chance. Also, this particular department is short funded and under staffed....thier departments cars dont have hood cameras, and they just recently arrested the guy who committed the murder.

This particular officer was an ex-marine, and served in several different countries as an embassy guard.

HE was a champion. HE was a stand up guy. He probably did some wrong, but I doubt he broke into a building/house under construction and literally shit all over the place for a thrill.

How would you feel if someone broke into your place under construction and shit all over the floor? Being an athlete doesnt mean shit, its not how good you are at something, its how you act that defines your moral character. Being drunk, vandalising a place, shitting on the floor for thrills with your college buddies....man, you call that a good time? You deserved what you got. So the cops won over you. It's called justice.

Anyone can get into Cornell

Anyone can get into Cornell (including me). And 6th is not the best. I know number one in women's rowing.

6th in the rowing

And now we know who you are ;p

and now I know you're a faggot

Not, in the ordinary gay person way, just a despicable faggot way. I don't care if you know who I am, my story stays the same

and for the idiot up top.... Cornell.. easy to get into? seriously, what the fuck are you talking about. Maybe if you're dad is Donald Trump.

And for the other guy. Well, at least you admit and are aware that the police institution is becoming more militarized. As to you're beleif in it's justification, thats your boat to float in.

and for anyone else willing to continue discussing these matters, why don't you stick to the subject, instead of hiding behind your computer and taking pot shots. what have you done with your lives.. huh? I don't want to know or care, I gave a description of myself to give you a better picture of what my arrest situation was like. I admit that I was guilty, and that... according to the present laws, I WAS GUILTY. BUT I didn't steal or break anything (when i said breaking in, that meant sliding open the window that was unlocked)...... does that justify a charge of 1st DEGREE BURGLARY?? I'm no fucking career criminal, and as for the fake ID's. Why doesn't the US lower the drinking age to 18 like most the rest of the world?? I like to get pussy, and alcohol is one way to speed up the courting process. Which is entirely my right, to pursue my happiness. In conclusion, if I were in another country, say Norway, or better Canada. I probablly would have gotten a charge of Trespassing onto private property, and that's IT. Because I wouldn't have gotten TWO FUCKING FELONY charges for faked id's because.... the Canadian legal drinking age starts at 18 (someplaces 19) and hence wouldn't have had fake ID's in the first place.

So to wrap it up my only punishment would have been to maybe pay a fine of 500 to 1200 dollars, maybe some community service (a week at most) and thats it.

this is a rough definition

this is a rough definition based upon my own personal run ins with similiar situations

burglary 1st is something roughly defined as the unlawful entry into a dwelling with the intent to commit an unlawful act - - it also varies depending on what state your in

I'm not sure what shitting on the floor counts as....littering? vandalism? biological warfare? because you were with a buncha guys, it probably also counted as criminal mischief

I don't know much about illegal identification documents (never had a fake ID), but when you were charged, it was probably under the impression that there may be more to the scenario than originally stated - - identity theft and things like that are on the rise and being taken much more seriously than before.....they probably had to do a deep investigation to figure out the origins of your illegal document

keep in mind, most of the time when a person is charged with something and gets 'benefit of the doubt' because they are a good kid, you can be threatened with a year in prison, but only do 5 years probation....its part of the system as well...talk to a DA, get a lawyer....hell, if you play your cards right, you can get threatened with 5 years prison, and talk it down to 6 months jail, 5 years probation and a slap on the wrist

when I got in trouble (burglary 3rd and petite larceny), I was threatened with one year in prison. I got off with 5 years probation, youthful offender status, and one firm slap on the wrist. I got lucky if ya ask me, and I'm not bitching one bit. If anything, straightened my ass right out. As long as you straighten your shit out, what you do in the past doesnt matter. Vice versa, it doesnt matter if you're a stand up athlete and good in college, you fuck up by breaking into a place and shitting on the floor with a buncha your buddies, kiss your own good working ass goodbye buddy - - you broke the law, and you fucking KNEW better. Time to pay the piper.

My apt. got broken into

(the door was actually broken in half). Everything of value was stolen, and the thief obviously left prints on top of the fridge.

The police would not investigate; instead, the dispatch told me to bring a list of the stolen property, ALONG WITH ALL THE RECEIPTS, down to the department, and they'd file a report! I felt like I was the criminal.

I've been stopped several times for no reason because cops DO like to target people who are alone, (no witnesses), but when they found out what kind of job I had, they would immediately back off. It still didn't set well with me, so now I have front and rear view camcorders installed in my car. I don't trust any of them. They're only nice when they have to be. And I don't have that good job any more, so they might decide NOT to be as nice to me in the future.

BWAHAHAHAHAHAHA!

Oh man, that's too much. Lemme see...

Current years alive: 32

Times in bank when robbed: zero

Yeeeah...

oh yeah, everyone talks shit about the cops

but when they recover your stolen goods, get the guy that wronged you, or take down some lunatic with a gun

oh yeah, everyone loves the cops! - - we just dont wanna pay money to thier cause for driving at dangerous speeds

I'm an athlete and have a 4.0 at college! So you see...I CAN drive drunk officer!

"fuck you son....you're coming with me"

"....damn, better call dad to hire me a lawyer"

and another thing...kids get pissed when cops bust thier balls about having air soft guns or realistic looking guns in cars......HELLO! FACT: did you know that if you flashed that shit at some gangster with a real gun, he would fucken WASTE YOU....and what the fuck is it doing in your backseat anyway? moron

Why the violent attitude towards cops

We all know there are people who abuse the power of their position but some of these comments, especially the first, are just plain insane. My father is an officer, has been for over 32 years. I've grown up around cops my whole life. Their job has always been arresting people for the crimes they commit, not harassing them for every little thing without provocation.

And yes they're on the lookout for suspicious behavior that's their job. If you don't want to have to worry about cops getting damning information out of you, don't commit crimes its that simple. And name one reason it doesn't make sense for them to be trained in getting information about crimes out of people. Think of the victims.

Almost every officer I have ever met has nothing but contempt for the kinds of situations that have been described here. Those that abuse their power make it harder for the rest of them to actually get the job done. The techniques are designed to get information, only really stupid cops try to extract false confessions.

One case mentioned above talks about a detective failing to return information in a robbery case. The patrolmen definitely acted inappropriately but thats a bottom of the barrel job and the bigger the department the harder it is to track the scumbags in it. But there may be several reasons the detective didn't get back to you. Firstly there maybe an ongoing, and larger, investigation. I assume you come from a fairly large city from your description, or at least the crime happened there, its very possible that there was just no evidence to arrest the men on and he had too many other open cases. It may not be the most professional but there are priorities and degrees in crime.

I agree its important to protect yourself from police abuse, but remember that 90% of them really are trying to do the right thing. And to the first person suggesting we should be prepared to kill them, thats an insult to men like my father who have risked their lives acting as a buffer between the violence you promote and everyday people who just want to live by the laws you carelessly dismiss.

I would argue that whether a

I would argue that whether a cop is "good" or "bad" at heart is pretty much irrelevant if their training is bad. And they are trained in ways to trick people into giving up their rights. It is routine.

But apart from that, you don't explain how we're supposed to tell whether Officer X is one of the good 90% or one of the bad 10%. Even those extremely generous figures don't add up to very good odds when you consider what might be at stake. The only way to protect yourself is to act as though you're dealing with one of the bad 10%.

If someone puts one bullet into a revolver and spins the chamber, there's a pretty good chance (at least 86%) that it won't fire when you pull the trigger. But you still treat it as though it will fire. To do otherwise would be reckless and stupid.

There is nothing to gain, and everything to lose, by giving the cop (or the revolver) the benefit of the doubt.

Don't Rely On The Police

The argument "You complain about he police now but when you're in trouble you'll want them around" is faulty. Let me ask you a question: Who's responsibility is it to keep you safe? Your own? Or the Police? YOU are in charge of YOUR own safety and the safety of you family. Don't let anyone convince you otherwise.

lying to get a conviction or

lying to get a conviction or to help out a fellow cop has a name, it's called PERJURY.

any cop engaging in such behavior should be fired, have their pension revoked, and be barred from public service for the rest of their life.

Know what happened to the bullies in my high school?

They went on to careers in law enforcement. Go figure.

Most of this is correct..except 5

They are allowed to search whatever they want nowadays. Well I know especially in NEW york...I think the patriot act gives them that power. I've been pulled over a couple of times where narcotics officers searched glove compartment..trunk...didn't even ask to search...nor did they find anything..thank god ;)

They cannot legally do that.

They cannot legally do that. Next time, if there is a next time be sure to get the name of the officer and contact his superiors. Most police cars, especially those is large cities are have dash cams which can prove what you are claiming or disprove it. Officers are unable to alter the video so don't worry about it. If they are searching without your permission be sure to ask what they are looking for and under what authority they are using to justify the search. You can ask questions and they have to legally give you the answers.

If you are driving a vehicle

If you are driving a vehicle and the police light you up, acknowledge them by waving your hand out the window but don't stop on the side of the street. Pull into a private parking lot be it a grocery store, Wal-Mart or church. Some lot that is big and has lots of parking spaces. This is so it won't be noticed if it sits there for a few hours. The police will have double trouble trying to search on private property without the property owners concent if you do not give yours. They cannot tow your car if it's parked in a private lot. If you get the one preverbial call tell your friend to pick up your car.

If it's late at night and they threaten to get a warrant, tell them to go ahead and get one. The chances they'll wake up a judge to have them sign it or pretty low.

Most of what you say is

Most of what you say is inaccurate. First off officers can legally search anything in the immediate vicinity if there is a reasonable threat to personal safety. Second officers cannot legally search a vehicle if they have no reason, there is nothing in plain sight, they cannot smell anything and there is not a danger to personal safety. If you get pulled over for a speeding ticket and they ask to search your car you can say no and they cannot legally do anything about it.

Lastly, if an officer threatens to obtain a warrant in an attempt to get you to consent to a search that is coercion, which is illegal. Anything that an officer may find in a search under those circumstances would be inadmissible in a court of law.

The rules obviously vary

The rules obviously vary around the world. In the UK, stop and search laws are very specific. I believe that they can check your coat pockets, but not trouser pockets on the street. If they want to check that, they have to take you in.
My advice would be "Be helpful if you've got nothing to hide". Don't be a dick, these guys have got a job to do, and get precious little thanks for it. Don't give them a reason to find you interesting.
I reckon that the first item on your top ten list of things to NOT do, is 1 - Break the law.

If you are pulled aside

If you are pulled aside while driving, make sure you do NOT start waving your hands up in the air, reaching for the glove compartment, and swinging yur arms violently.

You will get shot!!!

number 5

Number 5 is incorrect. There's something called "search incident to arrest." When an officer arrest you, he has the right to search the immediate area around you to ensure his safety.

this is true to an extent.

this is true to an extent. An officer can only search to the extent that their personal safety is in danger. For example if you are arrested on a DUI and officer could not legally search the trunk of your car or glove box. Actually they can't search much of anything as long as it is locked without a search warrant. There are things such that the 'plain sight' where if the officer is able to see something of interest, such as a shotgun or drugs, in plain view they can seize it. Do not confuse that with a search. There is also smell, if an officer can smell, say for example marijuana, that gives them probable cause to search... but not locked items.

You cannot assault an

You cannot assault an officer that is executing an illegal search but you cannot be charged for anything they find as a result of that illegal search. It's the 'Fruit of the Poisonous Tree'... even if they found a note that says search a mall locker and obtained a legal warrant for the locker any evidence gathered would be inadmissable. Even if the officer is a bad officer they would know better than an illegal search.

Been There

Always remember this: They never want to "just help you out if you tell the truth", they don't "know the judge", they don't "have pull with the prosecutor if you just talk", and you will never "make it easier on yourself by just talking".

my motto is, if a cop opens

my motto is, if a cop opens his mouth, hes lying. never tell them anything, beleving they can or will help you, it simply is not true, that you can beleive.

No matter what you believe,

No matter what you believe, you give up ALL constitutional rights when you are in the presence of a police officer. Yes, they cover for each other, lie, deceive, and generally couldn't give a crap about you. They will physically hurt you without a second thought. Remember, those who would choose to enter a career in ENFORCEMENT are clearly deranged and must be denied the opportunity to enter such a field...

Double question

Cops will also try to ask you two questions at the same time. For instances, "You don't have any drugs so you don't mind me seaching?" If you are not thinking then you will probably answer no, which allows him/her to search whatever.
